In 1984, working from his dorm room, Michael Dell built and sold a customized computer. It represented the first one-to-one contact for what became a global business, and it led to the birth of Dell’s direct model.

Twenty two years later, new technologies made it possible to directly connect online with those worldwide customers and the Direct2Dell blog was launched. The first post announced “Real People are Here and We’re Listening” and that still rings true today.

Direct2Dell was one of the first corporate social media tools and became the case study for other businesses that were ready to interact with their customers directly. Since 2006, it has allowed us to share insights and foster conversations – even the tough ones – with honesty and transparency.

As the Dell direct model has expanded to include multiple roads to market, and the Dell Technologies family has expanded to include Dell, Dell EMC, Pivotal, RSA, SecureWorks, Virtustream, and VMware, our desire for one-to-one contact with our customers remains embedded in our culture.
