For Dell Cloud Client-Computing, this year has been all about growing our portfolio in order to bring the benefits of desktop virtualization to more industries, markets and use cases. Now, we’re shifting gears to focus on letting you know how Dell is different from other vendors, in making desktop virtualization simpler and less costly to implement, manage and own.
In January we introduced a new level of desktop virtualization mobility when we launched the first pocket-sized thin client, Dell Wyse Cloud Connect. A few months later we announced the first all-in-one thin client for customers who require an end point that looks as good as it operates. We also introduced an ultra high-performance quad-display thin client for power users who need the workstation-class functionality on their virtualized desktops. Not to mention, the many updates we’ve rolled out to make existing products more flexible, manageable, user-friendly and secure.
Dell’s Solar Powered Classroom Project is also an excellent example of the benefits that Dell Wyse can provide as desktop virtualization expands to new settings. Leveraging the energy efficiency of Wyse thin clients, Dell has delivered solar powered Learning Labs to remote areas globally where lack of reliable and affordable electricity has historically been a major barrier to providing technology access to students.
“When I witnessed the actual container [Learning Lab] and all of the technology in place I really began to understand the benefits behind it. Having a look at the solar panels to start off with, but also having a look at the Wyse Zero client, the wattage use of electricity is really, really low, so it’s absolutely perfect for this type of environment,” said Keith Magee, Education and Training Specialist with Dell partner, Camara Education
That’s real-world impact and just one reason why I’m excited to announce that at VMworld today we’re building on that momentum and introducing the dual core Wyse Intel-based 3000 series thin client.
This is the first Dell thin client that runs on an Intel processor, and while its dual core Bay Trail chip packs enterprise-grade performance, it’s small enough to fit and look great on any desk (or back of monitor). It can also connect to almost anything, from cutting-edge high-speed network connections to legacy peripherals such as scanners, bar code readers, and printers, and it supports up to two displays, making it easy to place into just about any work or school environment, with no need to purchase new compatible hardware.
Additionally, we’re adding PCoIP capabilities to our awesome all-in-one thin client. Since its debut in May as the most secure all-in-one on the market, this client offers optimal reliability and performance in a compact and elegant design. With the addition of VMware-based PCoIP, it becomes the only all-in-one with PCoIP and support for dual band Wi-Fi, making it work almost anywhere, and now offers enhanced performance capabilities with 3D graphics and our Wyse-designed technology to enable HD multimedia redirection, reducing the load on servers and networks alike. Check it out – it’s perfect for customers seeking the security, manageability and reliability of a Dell thin client with the elegant design and performance of a powerful, integrated all-in-one.
We’re also bringing the benefits of Wyse enhanced SUSE Linux to the ultra-powerful Wyse 5000 series and 7000 series quad core thin clients. For power users with intensive workloads who want the efficiency and flexibility benefits of desktop virtualization, these devices pack more than enough performance to deliver rich 3D graphics, HD multimedia and Unified Communications with ease. Support for Linux makes the devices even easier deploy, manage and use, and less susceptible to viruses and malware.
Finally, for simplified deployment, we’re also updating our portfolio of end-to-end solutions for cloud client-computing. These solutions are tested and “pre-packaged” from datacenter components to endpoints and optimized for desktop virtualization. Today’s updates include:
- Increased user densities, new 3D graphics capabilities and inclusion of Virtual SAN for Dell Wyse Datacenter for VMware Horizon View.
- Dell Wyse Datacenter for VMware Horizon DaaS, a new solution offering enterprises and service providers a cost-effective Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS) solution that includes the capability for multi-datacenter, multi-tenancy, 3D graphics and true datacenter to end point management and monitoring. Now Dell Managed VDI Services can handle the DaaS end-to-end monitoring and management.
- ISV certifications for Dell Wyse Datacenter for Virtualized Workstations to insure graphic intensive software support within desktop virtualization.
More details on our new end-to-end solutions are available on our Dell4Enterprise post.
We truly believe that as management, usability, security and cost concerns are ironed out, desktop virtualization will increasingly render incredible value by liberating data in entirely new scenarios.
