Dell Ranked Number One in Worldwide Thin and Terminal Client Market Share

Topics in this article

Last week, IDC released its Worldwide Quarterly Enterprise Client Device Tracker for the fourth quarter of 2014. I’m proud to announce that Dell cloud client-computing reclaimed its position as the top vendor in the industry with 27.2 percent of the total global thin and terminal client market share worldwide. Dell also had the highest year-over-year growth among competitors, with our total global shipments increasing 12 percent from the same quarter the previous year. Additionally, Dell is the number one vendor in terms of units shipped for all of calendar year 2014.*

It’s exciting to see our hard work pay off, and I attribute this great accomplishment to three main factors:

Making it Easier for our Customers

Dell Wyse thin client customers hail from a number of different industries, from call centers to education, finance, healthcare, engineering firms, and retailers – just to name a few. Over 200 million people interact with Wyse products every day, and all of them have very unique business and IT needs. To meet the vast array of business scenarios, Dell makes it easier than ever for organizations to plan, deploy and run desktop virtualization in a way that best suits their needs. Cloud and mobile technologies have unleashed a new level of business productivity as workers seek anytime, anyplace access to data and applications. Solutions that can manage and securely deliver that data are therefore becoming increasingly important. Helping our customers reduce this complexity and making it easier for them to manage and deploy IT solutions means that that they can concentrate on running their business, not their IT.

Relentless Commitment to Constant Innovation

Wyse invented the thin client and has more patents for thin client innovation than anyone else – you could say that innovation is in our DNA. Dell offers a diverse range of thin clients, management options, virtualization platforms, and reference architectures to meet a variety of business needs. In 2014, we released several new technologies that enable customers to do more with desktop virtualization, while making it easier to deploy and run than ever before. The ultra-mobile Dell Cloud Connect, the 5000 series all-in-one (AIO) thin client, the powerful 7000 series quad display with workstation-grade capabilities, and our first Intel-based thin client, the Wyse 3000 series, are just a few examples of the new solutions we introduced. And while we’re proud of the portfolio we offer today, we’re not taking our foot off the gas pedal any time soon. You’ll see more innovative solutions coming from us later in 2015 that weren’t even technologically possible a few years ago.

End-to-End Portfolio

Our offerings go beyond thin clients – we’re truly a one-stop-shop for all of our customers’ virtual desktop needs. In addition to thin clients, Dell offers desktop virtualization software, device management solutions, as well as hyper-converged VDI appliances. We offer comprehensive services to help customers select, deploy and maintain their solutions, and we make it easy for them to buy from Dell with the familiar Wyse brand for our entire desktop virtualization and thin client portfolio. We believe end-to-end is about assuming total responsibility for our solutions, and providing one point of contact from before the sale to delivery to ongoing service and support. Dell cloud client-computing solutions are complementary to wider Dell client and enterprise solutions so we can truly call ourselves an end-to-end provider.

The Austin Community College (ACC) ACCelerator high-tech learning lab is a great example of the tremendous benefits that our thin clients deliver. The ACCelerator is a 30,000 square foot computer lab that uses virtual desktops based on Dell Wyse D10DP thin clients to provide students with a personalized and flexible technology-based learning environment. ACC administrators, professors and students praise the benefits of the ACCelerator lab including improved learning and success rates for students, personalized instruction, as well as the reliability of the technology. Melanie Dickerman, Senior System Administrator at ACC, states, “Virtual desktop infrastructure is a very flexible way of putting a desktop in front of students without buying very expensive hardware.” She also speaks to the ease of deploying the Wyse thin clients, stating, “The Wyse clients have the view client built into them so all we all have to do is turn them on and tell them where to connect and they bring up the desktop.”

Knowing that our technology is making a difference for customers motivates us! For more information on what we can do for your organization visit Dell.com and check out the blog here to learn more on the Austin Community College ACCelerator high-tech learning lab.
