On Tuesday, Texas state Senator Kirk Watson spoke to a group of Dell employees about the recently completed legislative session and issues important to citizens of Texas. Watson also recognized Dell as a leader in computer recycling with a senate resolution he presented during his talk. Dell leaders worked With Senator Watson in 2007 to pass a computer recycling bill in Texas that was signed by the governor.
The law requires electronics manufacturers to establish recycling programs to collect their own brands from consumers at no cost. The government must ensure that all manufacturers were complying with the law, including annual reporting of collection volumes. Seven other states enacted the same or similar laws modeled after the TX law championed by Sen. Watson.
Dell has long led the industry in computer recycling, having recovered more than 150 million pounds of end-of life technology globally in FY11 alone. The company is working toward its goal of recycling 1 billion pounds by 2014. Dell currently offers asset recovery services for business customers who refresh their technology solutions and need to know their private information and intellectual property is managed and destroyed properly. Also, Dell has successfully run a free consumer recycling program called Dell Reconnect where people can drop off any brand of computer with associated equipment at more than 2200 Goodwill locations in the U.S. and Canada.
