Higher Ed Computing Gets a New Look with Dell Wyse

While it might be the end of the school year for many students, we know that educators and the IT staff that support them hardly get a break. From June 11-13, tech leaders from colleges and universities will convene in Las Vegas at UBTech (formerly known as EduComm) – a premier technology and leadership event for higher education. Dell Wyse can be found in booths # 601 and #603 showcasing our cloud client computing portfolio for education.

For those looking for a deep dive into a university deployment, check out the conference session with Dell Wyse customer The University of Colorado Boulder. Robert Dixon, Director of IT for Housing and Dining Services, and his staff tackled a problem facing IT staff at many universities. His group supports multiple buildings, departments and databases around campus. In fact, Robert’s group is the largest on-campus auxiliary department with 600 staff and employs 1,200 students, the most out of any department on campus. His group also is in charge of approximately 30% of all campus buildings. Maintaining computer security, reliability and cost effectiveness were challenging considering the shear number of databases (155) and the 500 workstations accessing them. Robert turned to virtualization and Dell Wyse cloud client computing and he’s never looked back. Some of the key results:

  • Eliminated approximately 4 hours of downtime a week and reduced the risk of exposure to malware
  • Reduced system maintenance needs by 20%
  • Delivered 50% cost savings on endpoint devices
  • Cut energy use of devices by more than 90%, for annual savings of $32,000.

According to Robert, “The breadth, width and depth of what we are doing with virtualization will change how computing is done at other universities.”

You can learn more about University of Colorado Boulder in our case study or hear Robert Dixon in person at UBTech on Tuesday, June 12, from 8:50 am to 9:30 am in his session entitled Virtualization and Thin Clients at University of Colorado at Boulder .

While attending UBTech on June 12 and 13th, get your coffee fix and catch up on work using the Dell Wyse X90m7 mobile thin clients at the Dell Wyse Internet Café. A barista will be on hand to whip up coffee drinks from the full-service espresso bar.
