HIMSS 2011 Recap

Upon entering the zealously crowded Orange County Convention center in Orlando, Florida, for the 2011 Health Information and Management Systems Society conference, the vast expanse of exhibitor booths was outweighed only by the collective excitement for the future of Health Information Technology. Between the days of Feb. 21 – Feb. 23, HIMSS11 hosted over 1000 booths and was attended by more than 31,000 health IT enthusiasts, making it one of the largest HIMSS events ever.

This year, much of the HIMSS conversation focused around the issues of mobility, data security, and interoperability. Our Dell team utilized touch screen surfaces, demonstrations and an interactive projection wall to show our solutions. The interactive projection wall, in particular, was a big success, highlighting our broad portfolio of Information-Driven Healthcare solutions.

Check out this video of Anne Clarke, Events Manager, using our interactive wall:

Dell’s role at the conference was punctuated by our team’s leadership and vision in the healthcare space through solutions such as mobile clinical computing, managed security services, unified clinical archiving, revenue cycle solutions and EMR services. One of our solution sessions that received great praise featured Dave Marchand, Chief Technology Officer for Dell Healthcare & Life Sciences, and Tom Patterson, Executive Director of Global Security Services, discussing the potential dangers of mobile security and the managed security solutions Dell provides to prevent data leakage.

Immediately following his “Healthcare is a Business” presentation, Mike Morris, Dell Services Revenue Cycle Solutions National Practice leader, delivered a great presentation on the evolving complexity of a hospital’s revenue cycle.

This year’s HIMSS surpassed records set by its 50 year old history with exhibitors lining every inch of the over 450,000 sq. foot convention hall center. Reflecting on the current HIMSS conference at hand, Harry Greenspun, Chief Medical Officer for Dell Services, provided his insight to what made this Health IT event truly unique.

Harry Greenspun at the 2011 HIMSS Conference:

As HIMSS consistently grows from year to year, it provides a great indication of the increasing enthusiasm for the healthcare IT space. With the beginning FY12, I am excited to continue to expand upon the great potential I saw exhibited by our entire team at HIMSS11.
