Tomorrow is International Women's Day and in the United States we recognize Women's History Month during March. I had the chance to sit down with Gil Casellas, Dell's new vice president of corporate responsibility, to speak about the critical contributions that women make to business, society and culture around the globe. You can see the interview in the video below.
Gil hit on several topics in our short chat, including the history of International Women's Day (first established in 1910 by the way), and some fantastic background on Admiral Hopper, who made pioneering contributions to the high tech industry. We also spoke about Dell's performance on attracting, retaining and promoting women in our own organization, and areas in which Dell can do more. You may remember we recently posted information on the results of a recent Dell-supported Catalyst study about women in the IT industry. Finally Gil hit on the impact HIV is having on women's health around the globe and the statistics are alarming.
I'm proud to report that internally and externally Dell will be recognizing the achievements of women in the high tech industry in the coming days. In India, Dell will be hosting a number of events for our employees including stress management seminars for employees and inviting several women's organizations to visit our campuses. And in the UK we have partnered with Cisco, IBM and Microsoft to launch the "Connecting Women in Technology" networking group, which hosted its inaugural meeting yesterday focused on the challenges of attracting women to, and retaining them in, the high-tech industry.
Gil's call to action at the end of the interview is something we all can put into action right away. Take the opportunity in March to recognize an important woman in your life and offer to be a mentor for someone. Together we can make a world of difference.
