Michael Dell spoke last week at Health Evolution Partners’ Innovation Network (HEPIN) conference in Dana Point, California, about the critical challenges facing the healthcare industry and outlined key opportunities for technology to improve patient care and reduce overall costs.
This was an important message, delivered to a targeted audience of over 350 c-level healthcare industry executives. HEPIN is where many of the strategic decision-makers in healthcare convene annually to discuss and share ideas on policy, technology, and the future of their industry. HEPIN was founded by David Brailer, Chairman of Health Evolution Partners and the nations first “health information czar” when he was the National Health Information Technology Coordinator.
In a candid “fireside-chat” with New York Times reporter Steve Lohr, Michael shared his insights on the role of secure, private cloud-enabled Electronic Medical Record (EMR) as a critical enabler for accelerating physician practice adoption and improving the overall efficiency of the healthcare system.
He also talked about the need to prove to the healthcare industry the economic value of implementing IT and sited the time savings results for physicians and nurses in the Dell HCLS EMEA Mobile Clinical Computing BVIT study.
Jamie Coffin, Vice President and General Manager of Dell Healthcare and Life Sciences, also participated at the event on a panel discussion about the Future of Personalized Health. The discussion centered on innovation and regulatory policy for genomic-based disease diagnostics and drug treatments. Jamie highlighted two of the critical enablers that require industry focus and collaborative solutions.
First, IT for EMR is the basis for realizing the future of personalized medicine and delivering the best clinical care possible. Second, he stated that today the industry needs to agree on policies and standards for data to enable information exchange in an effective and secure way – driving innovation for not just personalized medicine but personalized health.
