New Dell Precision R5500 Workstation Supports Flexible and Secure Work Environments with Unmatched Performance

We are pleased to introduce to you the newest member of our workstation family today—the Dell Precision R5500 rack workstation. This next generation workstation offers the full scalability and performance of our highest performing desktop workstation in a dual-socket rack form factor.

The R5500 is designed for our customers that need more security and flexibility than what a traditional desktop or mobile workstation provides. The rack workstation is located in a customer’s secure data center or other centralized location so users can protect intellectual property and also drive productivity for their global and rotating workforces by providing remote 1:1 access 24-hours a day. In addition, the R5500 is ideal for work occurring in inhospitable, hazardous or extremely remote environments, like an oil well head or a manufacturing plant, because the user can stay productive, safe and comfortable in their own workspace while accessing workstation-class performance remotely. An additional benefit includes the removal of heat, noise and bulk for a more favorable workspace, especially when users are operating multiple systems locally like a financial trading-room floor.

Users seamlessly connect to the R5500 via optional PC-over-IP hardware-based compression technology, from Teradici, from the Dell Precision FX100 Zero Client. PC-over-IP hardware-based compression transfers only the rendered graphics pixel data over the network, ensuring a faster and more responsive remote experience than most software solutions. Alternately, customers can remotely connect via a notebook with VMware View software. The FX100 provides USB and other ports for keyboards, audio and video and dual-monitors. Select configurations will be available with quad-monitor support via dual FX100 devices in the coming months, providing expanded visual real estate.

The R5500 offers the latest Intel Xeon processors with increased memory capacity of up to 192GB and dual-wide GPU slots that scale up to 450 watts. Other new features include dual CPU of up to 130W for better performance, redundant hot swappable power supplies to help reduce downtime, increased storage options with five 2.5" SATA or six 2.5" SAS drives and system ID button for easy identification in a rack environment.

Unlike competitive solutions, the R5500 offers options for up to five industry standard full-height and full-length PCIe x16 slots including support for a full range of dual high-end graphics and GPGPU compute solutions. The R5500 architecture supports the emerging paradigm in high-performance computing (HPC) using General Purpose Graphics Processing Units (GPGU) for applications like weather forecasting, digital image processing and molecular modeling.

The rack workstation also offers certifications from leading ISVs including Autodesk, Dassault Systemes, PTC, Siemens PLM Software, Softimage, ESRI, Dynamic Graphics, CNC, Landmark Graphics and many others to ensure the users’ critical software is compatible and runs smoothly on their hardware.

Finally, to keep our customers’ operations running smoothly and IT costs down, we offer Dell ProSupport for both Dell and non-Dell hardware and software issues, Custom Factory Integration (CFI) for simplified and faster deployment and robust manageability options. To protect assets and intellectual property our workstations offer Dell Data Protection | Encryption, Dell DataSafe Online Backup, fingerprint reader and Dell System Track and Recovery service.

The Dell Precision R5500 is available globally today with a starting price of $2,551 USD. Please weigh in with your questions, comments and feedback.
