Taking a Bi-Modal Approach to Cloud

It’s no surprise that building and implementing a cloud strategy is a top priority for IT leaders. In a recent study, Dell found that 82 percent of global organizations reported they use cloud in their business.

These organizations look to cloud solutions to increase agility, improve operational functions and reduce costs within their business. However, the importance of legacy systems remains. Finding the right  balance of cloud and on-premise infrastructure  continues to be a pain-point for many IT leaders.

Taking a bi-modal approach to IT is becoming a popular way to support a cloud strategy with traditional IT delivery. This approach combines traditional IT functions to support existing systems, while agile IT can work to increase speed and efficiency.

Many foundational components must be considered when developing any IT strategy, but when evaluating hosting workloads and applications in the cloud, specific nuances must be taken into account.

Below are some key points that are critical to success when considering a bi-modal approach to cloud.

  1. Is your workforce ready to support a shift to cloud computing? The skills and knowledge of traditional IT do not always translate to a cloud approach. Many organizations find they do not have the expertise in house to execute these strategic IT initiatives. Be sure to review your workforces’ competencies, and plan to fill any gaps before starting to execute on a cloud strategy.
  2. Is your cloud strategy aligned with business imperatives? A cloud approach should be driven by the business strategy and culture, not viewed as the point of a business strategy. IT must partner closely with business leadership to understand overarching goals, then evaluate what solutions can be used to drive a desirable outcome.
  3. Do you have a strategy in place to select the right cloud partners? The multi-cloud, multi-vendor ecosystem can be overwhelming when assessing the best cloud approach for your business. Partnering with a trusted service provider can be beneficial when in need of vendor-agnostic recommendations — whether the cloud strategy is comprised of private, public or hybrid solutions.
