World of Warcraft Notebook: Horde or Alliance—Which One Are You?

You might have seen reactions to our teaser page on Dell.com. Today, we start taking orders for the XPS M1730: World of Warcraft Edition from United States customers who signed up for the e-mail. The product will be available to other customers in the U.S. begininng on December 11.

If you registered at the teaser site, soon you will get an e-mail that looks like this one:

Here's the deal. We have teamed with the folks at Blizzard Entertainment to create a product that allows fans of World of Warcraft (WoW) to immerse themselves in the game. Our partnership started earlier this year in January when we auctioned off two custom WoW notebooks for charity. For this system, we wanted to go way beyond a custom appearance. How did the XPS team go about doing that? They started with the award-winning XPS M1730 and beefed up the minimum config. I'll start with the system itself, and will explain other things that come with every system a bit later.

Every system comes pre-loaded with the games themselves: World of Warcraft and The Burning Crusade expansion pack. We'll also install all the major client patches for both games as well. We'll continue to test and ship future patches pre-installed as they are released by Blizzard. Dell's goal is to get you into the game with as little effort as possible. Beyond that, it has lots of World of Warcraft content, including original artwork desktop wallpapers and screen savers. The image below is the default Alliance wallpaper that you'll see when you first boot:

Alliance System:

Horde System:

Alliance and Horde systems side by side, front and back:

The Orc box, which contains the hardware accessories like the binder with User's Manual, the notebook power adapter, custom XPS WoW mousepad, WoW t-shirt, etc. coming down the manufacturing line.

There's a whole lot more to this than the system hardware. Everyone who orders this system will get three things: a Quest Envelope, a WoW backpack full of stuff and the system itself. Before I explain those things in more detail, I'll introduce Randy "Randydeluxe" Jordan to you. He's one of the hosts from the popular WoW podcast called The Instance. We recently invited him to Round Rock for a first-ever unboxing of the system so you can see exactly what you're going to get. This video is almost 30 minutes long, but it's a complete overview of what to expect.

Note: You can left-click on one of the video format links below to play that video in a browser window. Otherwise, you can right-click, then click on Save Link As, then click Save to download the video to your system. Either way, since it's a 30-minute video, it will take some time to load.

      Flash                                                                WMV                                                             MP4

I'll start by explaining the Quest Envelope. Here's the YouTube video where Randydeluxe looks at the it. The Quest Envelope will come to you separate from the system via certified overnight mail. It contains the following:

  • Golden Ticket – This provides you an opprortunity to get a customized figurine of your WoW character through FigurePrints. FigurePrints will access you character's data through Blizzard's servers to create a custom 3D figure of your character, complete with weapons and armor you can choose. Take a look at this video if you want to see what this is all about.
  • Blizzard Beta Club Card – The code on the card registers you for Blizzard's Beta Club, which gives you access to five upcoming beta tests, starting with the Wrath of the Lich King
  • Collector's Edition Account Upgrade Certificate – This allows you to upgrade your account to a collector's edition account, enabling you to get a special in-game pet.

The WoW backpack is what comes in the Night Elf box. Here's the video where Randydeluxe unboxes the it. The backpack has the following things in it:

In this vlog, you'll hear from Shane McWilliams, who is the program manager for the XPS M1730  World of Warcraft Edition development team. His main character is a Blood Elf Mage, and when this video was shot, he was level 56. Today, he's level 60, and has enough battleground experience to get the complete "Gladiator's Regalia" armor set when he hits level 70. He gives you a good overview of the system and the experience, and provides more insight into the design of the hardware.

The laptop itself is not super impressive, but the package that comes with it almost makes up for the cost. I know Dell owns Alienware, but I would spend 4 grand on AW for a gaming laptop. However I could give this one for a Christmas present and ninja loot the extras 🙂

  • Anonymous

    i want…

  • Anonymous

wow and I mean WOW …this is just amazing! This is the sickest gaming machine I have ever seen. Looks like its made from forged  metal. I want one NOWWWW!

  • Anonymous

    Haha, finally.

Everyone here on the YCS forums are huge WoW fans! This is really a great deal, and it sounds like something I’d love to get my son for Christmas!

Hopefully he’d be able to hit 70 and get good grades, lol!

  • Anonymous

I would like to see this come to Canada.

    Looks like pretty sweet system.

  • Anonymous

Looks great… It just needs one more thing to put the icing on.   It needs the 8800M!!   Why no GeForce 8800M vid card?   Put a pair of 8800Ms in there and I will order it up.

  • Anonymous

Have to admit, I don’t play WOW but this M1730 is a helluva lot better looking than the standard model.. Where’s my BSG XPS DELL?? Come on!

  • Anonymous

    Overpriced gimmick in my opinion…

When I heard Dell & Blizzard were doing some kind of collaboration I was looking forward to seeing something exciting and innovative. Instead what we got was a Dell XPS laptop with a few Warcraft extras and decals and an extremely inflated price…

    Gimmick.

The LCD back is amazing and the light-up bits BLOW MY MIND.

This is DEFINITELY on my Christmas list!!

  • Anonymous

I hope it will be available in Germany soon, put a pair of 8800Ms in there and I will order it.

  • Anonymous

Nice design and package, i must say! But when you create a WoW-laptop with that little RAM and with dualcore cpu with 2.2GHz,  i get a little disapointed! We dont need more than a GForce Ti4400 graphicscard to run both wow and wc3 on full graphics! What you need is PLENTY of ram and cpu power. So in my opinion there should be better ram and cpu so that its possible to do “high-effect”-bosses with more than 12fps.

So tumbs up for the package, but you should have explored the game more before deciding on the hardware!

  • Anonymous

I have to say my first goal is to get one of these, whens it coming to the uk guys???

  • Anonymous

    NEED TO HAVE!!!

someone already got the horde wallpaper? NEED TO HAVE!

    GIEF!!!

  • Anonymous

    This is a real WOW-Laptop 🙂

    I self own a  M1710 with LightFX….

Why give Dell not a small WOW-Add-On to use this Funktion ingame???

  • Anonymous

thats just funny price for a laptop that ain’t even that good and well it looks decent but the price is just too much for not that good thing… and gaming on laptop BLEH!

  • Anonymous

    Awsom looking system but… but… 4.5k for a laptop :)))

  • Anonymous

    DO NOT WANT

  • Anonymous

this com looks sooo good i wish i could get it but i do not have any mony for it.

    i will buy asap lol

  • Anonymous

I love WoW, but would be embarrassed to the point of suicide if I owned this monstrosity.

  • Anonymous

i like this computer a lot,if some one offered me one i would definetley take it..but if it doesn’t have enough RAM for it..i guess i would just have to put some in it..lol.well i seriously like WoW and i would love to have one of these.                  Good job on creating this computer!!!!

  • Anonymous

I can’t afford this, but if someone offered me one I’d take it.

  • Anonymous

    Exceptionally ugly.

  • Anonymous

Maybe this version will actually run WoW full screen with out the frame bog I see on my m1730.  (sense the sarcasm?)  Looks great, but until they actually work with Nvidia to get some decent video drivers our for their flagship gaming product.

  • Anonymous

Amazing laptop… definately on my christmas list but for those of us on more realistic salaries are looking at the price tag and going ouch…

  • Anonymous

I would really love it if this was available in Australia, I’d buy it in a second.

Mostly because I’m a giant WoW geek and partially because it’s one of the best pre-built laptops i’ve seen.

  • Anonymous

    WoW! For The Horde!
This would give me so much nerd cred! Booya.

  • Anonymous

WoW doesn’t need any power at all regarding the hardware, so its ridicculous to say that the hardware of that laptop is incapable of running it properly!  At the price of that laptop you could buy the best computer in the world, with all accessories. I wouldnt buy that. Ever.

  • Anonymous

Just nice. But that’s a big price tag, and there’s no way i could justify it.

  • Anonymous

Just got this sweet machine about 12 hours ago. I can’t believe how much fun it was just unpacking this thing. So much attention to detail…I shouldn’t have expected anything less from Blizzard, but Dell was in the equation so i had to wait and see. Blizzard QA made sure Dell delivers. Of course, this is an expensive ass ride (I’ll be paying on it for a long while lol…thanks to my brother and his AmEx for getting this to me so fast.)

That golden ticket figurine will be so sweet. Now, i just have to figure out how to get exactly the right gear to look good in a statue heh.

This thing performs great btw. I replaced my desktop with it and held onto my 24″ widescreen and it ran wow perfectly smoothly.

Thanks Blizzard and Dell for putting so much thought into making a system just for your fans. It’s really a fun lil’ toy you put together here…and with a backpack of booty for good measure lol. That was so cool. I didn’t even expect it as I just ordered the system on specs and appearance alone.

Woot. Now, to figure out how to get 2 of my characters names swapped with each other without a nightmare of a tech support phone call. I can just hear them now telling me to delete one of my characters or rename him to something random and hoping in 90 days I can reclaim the name. No f’reaking way.

I just got the 10 day trial of world of warcraft and I have only got 504 of 512 RAM needed what should I do?

  • Anonymous

I ordered this for a friend’s son who only wanted the game.  I got bare minimum specs and the total topped $5k.  Dell expects to ship it to him on Jan 11th 2008 but meanwhile you can get dell to mail you a greeting card letting the recipient know they have a gift from dell on the way.  I know nothing of WOW but I do own the regular M1730 and I love it!

  • Anonymous

WOW is right.  Dell and Blizzard hit it right.  System looks great and the XPS knows how to game.  To bad they made a horde one, (guess losers are everywhere).  The loot alone is almost a third of the system cost so it’s a steal for the system.  With the art work it’s hard to belive that a company can make money with this.  I don’t care as long as I get one before they catch on.

  • Anonymous

i got the wow pc in my cristmas gift 😀 i play wow like 12/7 😛

  • Anonymous

I purchased one of this system and did not get the following:

        Golden Ticket –
        Blizzard Beta Club Card –
        Collector's Edition Account Upgrade Certificate
i have called tech support and customer care and nobody seems to know how to send me this parts, please help me otherwise i will return the system

WOW is the best game ive EVER played on pc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is an absolute winner in terms of marketing. If Dell actually can sell these babys for the price listed then the marketing guy is a true genious. The fun part is that you can buy the exact same system for $2399.

I was very very dissapointed to see this is the actual basic system of the XPS M1730. So no dual video card (NVIDIA®GeForce®8700M GT graphics), 'just' 2GB of memory and an average harddrive.

When you consider the price of the WoW laptop this means you pay a whopping $1600 for a backpack, the games, the books and some ingame pets. If you configure the WoW laptop to the "best" option of the XPS M1730 (also $3999 normally) the price goes skyhigh (around $5600)

Is the art work and all the goodies worth $1600? No absolutely not. You could get the exact same stuff (without the art on the laptop itself of course) for around $300. Would I be bothered if I was a millionaire. No absolutely not, I would have ordered it as soon as I saw it.

This laptop is only for those totally bored and don't know what to do woth their cash. But still: selling some beautiful cardboard and some graphics for $1600? A true marketing masterpiece!

I'm sure this can be ordered off of the Dell website, and it'll ship to anywhere for the right price

    Looks beautiful

im a lvl70 mage named Rukia and i would realy like to have one but i dont have that kind of money and as i her its $4500 US and i just dont have the dernaro for that it is nice i give it a 9/10 but i still am happy for the people that do get it

  • Anonymous

Yeah, sure would be nice to get the unit I ordered 2 months ago, still waiting after multiple delays in shipment and countless hours on the phone either on hold or talking to people in India who are apparently just paid to answer the phone and lie, or provide no solution because "I'm sorry, but I don't see any delays in your order, it should be shipped on XXX date" (LIE), or transfer me to another person to tell me another lie, or put me on perpetual hold.

I can walk up the street and buy the Dell brand battery for this unit off the shelf, but apparently Dell is completely out of this battery and will not ship my order without it, even though every time I call in to try to get my order shipped the solution I am given initially is to cancel my order and reorder it without the battery. Every single time they say this! And every single time I tell them it is not possible to order it without the battery because I have already tried that and been told it is not possible. Oh no, they assure me, it is possible. And then we spend another 2 hours either on hold or in transfer to the magical person who can make this happen, only to find out yet again: Good thing I didn't cancel my order, because you cannot order it without the battery!!!! So, today I received another shipment delay notification, my 5th….and I can still walk up the street to the Best Buy and get this computer battery right off the shelf.

    This is beyond ridiculous.

Clue to Dell: No one wants to talk to people in India for hours, for any reason. They are being paid to answer phones and make up lies. Outsourcing customer service is a complete waste of money because they provide no service. They have no answers, no solutions, all they can do is look at the screen and say "I don't see any problem" If you aren't going to provide them with the means to solve customer problems, save the money (here's a brilliant idea – pass those savings along to the customer) and gut the outsourcing program. It doesn't work.

Solve the battery problem so people can get their systems. This is a limited edition system. If you cannot get the battery but your customers can, you should give them the option of having their system shipped without it. It's a no-brainer!

  • Anonymous

And 1 day later I receive another shipment delay notice, but the person I speak to on the phone this morning in Parts tells me that a shipment of batteries came in a week ago. Can I get any answers from the customer service or modification departments regarding why my order is being delayed again, and whether they show any battery in stock for my computer? NO, of course not. As a matter of fact, they cannot even tell me from looking at my order that there is any problem with shipping my order.

And now…next person, this time in Panama City, tells me is the graphic card….and…oh wait….also the processor…even though this morning Customer Service told me the delay was still the battery….but the Modification Departments in San Salvador and Panama City say the battery is not the issue… Asking to speak to a manager in the Modification Department in Panama City, "yes sir, I will transfer you to my manager"….puts me on hold, transfers me to Customer Care….I ask to be transferred back to the Modification Department….and the Customer Care person tells me there is no Modification Department….

So, according to San Salvador Modification Department my order was delayed because of the processor, but that issue has been resolved and the order is on request for expidited delivery, awaiting approval which I am told should take about 4 hours. The person who told me this promised….gave me a 100% guarantee….(have I heard that before? yes! have I received any reply, ever? No!) that she will contact me as soon as she knows whether the request has been approved or not, either way, she will let me know.

And so we wait….again…. She seemed like an honest person, I sure hope she wasn't lying to me.

it would be really nice to see this set of system offered elsewhere too. I have been eyeing this system since i first saw it on WoW's main page, another reason why i just bought an xps system – but that doesn't change the fact that i have to, if i intend to have a wow dell laptop, ask friends to buy it from dell in the first place and then pay an additional shipping (not to mention perhaps foregoing a large part of the warranty) just to get it here.

  • Anonymous

This definitly looks like a really nice laptop, however, after getting and xps 1710 as a gift, i will never purchase another xps unit from Dell.  For such an expensive unit I have had more issues with it than any computer I have ever owned.  The first thing to go was the battery.  Now the laptop won't boot 90% of the time because it doesn't recognise the power supply.  And when it does boot, gaming is out of the question because it crashes and then of course won't reboot due to the power supply issue.  So, thanks for the nice WoW laptop Dell, but no thanks.

  • Anonymous

Anyone know if the extras (gold ticket, account upgrade, beta, etc)are still being included?

Dell's site still shows them (even shows new $2999 price) but when I went to configure on the Dell site they didn't show under the configuration and they don't show in the cart.

To the best of my knowledge the they are still being offered.

These are promotional items and are done through a third party. Nowhere when placing the order or on the invoice is the quest envelope listed. In 21-30 days from system invoice, the envelope should be delivered to the customer.

Would be nice if this was available in Canada, I wouldn't hesitate to order one if I could.

Unfortunately it's only available to US customers, so those of us outside the US are precluded from these promotions. Any feedback as to why it's unavailable outside the US? I'd even pay extra if it meant I was able to get one.

  • Anonymous

well i got one of these as a gift. It arrived in early May and I have had no issue with it so far… its blazing fast and a great computer. The problem I'm having is that I never got the quest envelope, which is the only reason I would have chosen the WoW version over a regular XPS or a less expensive computer.

Its been a month now. The first time I called DELL Customer Service, I was told it would take up to 10 days to arrive after I got my computer. I just sent another customer service request, but I'm starting to get frustrated here.

  • Anonymous

so if i buy this product, will it come with all the boxes, envelope, the backpack, the books, the laptop, and all those goodies, and all the accessories in the video if so?

please tell me where i can buy this product?

p.s. im very desperate and anxious to buy this product

  • Anonymous

This is destined to fail, I have had a Dell Inspiron that i basically decked out with the internals of what the early xps model of the day had and lo and behold every 3 months or so something else goes wrong. I had my ram replaced twice, as well as, my motherboard, hard-drive, sound hardware and videocard.

I must say dell has excellent customer service, because their hardware is definately NOT excellent, they will replace everything and anything, but i would rather invest 3000g 😛 in something that does not brake down with a constant list of malfunctions and hardware issues.

  • Anonymous

I have read that alot of people have not received a golden ticket and membership card if they ordered outside of december/January. I just ordered mine last night and I wont get it until August. Ill tell you guys if I get one or not. It was not listed in the specs but "World of Warcraft themed Backpack, T-shirt and Mouse Pad" was. I think the ticket is sent in a black envelope and you get it AFTER your laptop arrives. Ill go ahead and contact them about it now. I just wanted the laptop though… LOL

  • Anonymous

Just got mine today, NO black envelope 🙁  Hope it's comeing in the mail, I too have sent out the feelers asking about it, It WAS advertised on the Dell site that it comes with the order and didn't say anything about certain months.

I received my laptop in September and was told this morning that the "black envelope" was never ordered and I will not be receiving my perks, I will be taking this up the line to Supervisors etc. My brother purchased the same packeage and had to fight for his as well. People need to know that Dell is not processing the perks and Blizzard needs to know as well.

    @ Debra

Not sure what happened.  I've sent you an email to get more information and I'll have someone look into this for you.
